Paper Chosen for Knight’s web site

Navy Veteran and Non-Traditional Queens University of Charlotte student Jason Sirmon uses in-class learning to boast the bottom line is his small business.

Taking fours courses this semester, finding the time to work on and in his business can often be a balancing act for any business owners.  But being assigned course projects with real world, up to date application is priceless to his training and consulting business.

Jason has found that the Knight School of Communication at Queens University, were he has set his goal to complete a Communication degree with a concentration in Organization Communication and minor in Leadership is allowing him to learn relevant and current information that he is being able to immediately implement into his business.

Jason transferred to the Adult Undergraduate Program of Hayworth College were he currently is taking classes in the Knight School of Communication.  His transfer from a much larger North Carolina University in January 2011 has already allowed him to use in-class activities like tweeting, blogging and writing press release to supplement his business.

A paper that he was assigned to write with web links was submitted to a national trade organization magazine in Jason current field were he hopes it will soon be published.

He has been able to write and produce a podcast on negotiating skills that is being launched on his company website.

He is combining a literature review project from his “Writing for Communication” (COMM 202) and what his is learning in “Group Dramatics and Team Building” (COMM #344) to prepare for a Keynote address on Leadership that we will delivery at the 2011 Small Business Awards Breakfast hosted by the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce, in Greenville NC in May of 2011 where PITT Community College will award the Outstanding Business Leader of Pitt County. And he has recently accepted another invitation where he will conduct team building activities to the “up and coming leaders” of the Pinehurst-Southern Pines Area Association of Realtors.

As his excitement grows while me finishes the final draft of a script that he is be required write for a digital video project in his “Intro to Digital Media course”, (COMM 210) he is already making plans to turn the project into a webinar.  He hopes to plant the seeds from his webinar to book speaking engagements in the future.

Jason claims that the quality of education he is receiving from Queens University is succeeding any other formal training he has ever obtained. Sirmon continues by stating that the faculty in the Knight School of Communication is current with their knowledge, has real life experience and empowers their students to success while being approachable with questions and concerns.  Sirmon states that his current Professors: Karen Dunn, Dr. Leanne Pupcheck and Dr.  James Neale all have wonderful work experience they bring into the classroom and Dr. John McArthur, has a profound depth of knowledge in the social mediate arena.  The of the Knight School of Communication Dean, Van King can usually be spotted pretty quickly on the floors of the Dana Building, where the school is located.

Jason’s doesn’t share the following information with many but his late father only completed the third grade due to medical complications. Now 41 years old, Jason considers his upcoming graduation a great milestone in his life that he WILL complete.  Not only to prove to his three little children that it can be done but to celebrate the longing desire he has carried around with him since he was a child. When Jason walks across the stage to receive his diploma, we will be about the same age as his father was when he lost the flight for his life to the blood clotting disease, hemophilia.
